Benefit Payments Shifted Ahead of May Bank Holidays

Published on

Next week, the payment date for several benefits, including Universal Credit, will be advanced for many individuals due to the upcoming May bank holiday on Monday, May 4. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) does not make benefit payments on bank holidays; therefore, payments scheduled for Monday, May 4, will be issued on Friday, May 1 instead.

A similar payment adjustment will occur on Monday, May 25, for benefits recipients, with payments expected to be made on Friday, May 22. While receiving payments early is beneficial, it also results in a longer gap until the next payment. The payment amount will remain unchanged unless there have been alterations to personal circumstances.

The shift in payment dates will also affect certain HMRC benefits, such as Child Benefit. Payment frequencies vary depending on the benefit type. For instance, Universal Credit payments are made on the same day each month, while Child Benefit is typically disbursed every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

It is important to note that Universal Credit has replaced several other benefits, including Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Income Support, Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits, and Housing Benefit. A comprehensive list detailing the payment frequency of specific benefits is available below.

In case of payment issues, individuals are advised to first verify their bank accounts. If the expected payment has not been received on the correct date, contacting the relevant helpline is recommended. However, these helplines may not be operational on bank holidays, necessitating a wait until the next working day for assistance.
