Greggs has implemented significant changes in select stores to combat shoplifting. The bakery chain has rearranged its layout by relocating self-service fridges and shelves behind the counter in certain branches to deter thieves. This alteration prevents customers in high-risk areas from directly accessing items like sandwiches and drinks; instead, employees retrieve these products from behind the till.
This adjustment comes amidst a surge in annual shoplifting incidents exceeding 500,000 cases, prompting retailers to enhance security measures to safeguard their merchandise. One of the revamped Greggs outlets in West Croydon, south London, recently unveiled the revised design, with other locations in Peckham, Whitechapel, Upton Park, Wilford, and Birmingham also test-running the new store setup.
The initiative aims to address the escalating shoplifting trend at Greggs, following several incidents captured on video showing audacious thieves stealing from the chain. Previously, Greggs and other food chains resorted to hiring security personnel at certain sites to protect staff and customers from shoplifters, with the latest store modification being another strategy to fortify defenses.
A customer visiting the refurbished Greggs in West Croydon remarked that the new layout significantly reduces theft opportunities, as most items are now only accessible through staff assistance. Greggs’ spokesperson clarified that this trial is part of various measures being tested in a small number of stores facing higher levels of antisocial behavior, assuring customers that the full range of popular Greggs products remains available behind the counter.
In a separate incident, a repeat offender known as Adam Gosling, who pilfered nearly £2,000 worth of goods from a Greenford branch over multiple visits, narrowly avoided incarceration. Gosling, sentenced to a four-month suspended jail term, expressed remorse for his actions and pledged never to repeat his offenses, acknowledging the profound regret he feels for his actions and expressing a desire to apologize to the affected parties.
