A man labeled as a ‘lone wolf whack job’ by former President Trump following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ dinner had previously been recognized with an award. Cole Thomas Allen, 31, residing in Torrance, California, had been honored as Teacher of the Month and was commended as ‘intelligent and kind’ by the students he assisted.
Reports indicate that Allen had checked into the Washington Hilton Hotel, the venue for the annual dinner attended by 2,500 individuals. Chaos ensued when gunshots were fired as the alleged gunman sought to breach a security checkpoint. One officer, wearing a bulletproof vest, sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a hospital. President Donald Trump, along with First Lady Melania and others, was swiftly evacuated from the stage.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump confirmed the apprehension of the gunman and shared a photo of the suspect subdued at the hotel. Law enforcement revealed that Allen was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and multiple knives. Trump, in a press briefing, referred to the shooter as a ‘lone wolf,’ echoing the belief shared by authorities.
Allen, known for his teaching role and lack of prior security service record, had received the Teacher of the Month award from C2 Education, a company specializing in college test preparation and tutoring. Individuals acquainted with Allen described him as proficient in various subjects and expressed shock over his involvement in the incident.
Aside from his educational role, Allen, a self-employed individual, is identified as an ‘indie game developer’ on LinkedIn. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from CalTech and a master’s degree in computer science from Cal State Dominguez Hills. His profile showcases a diverse set of skills encompassing game development, engineering, science, and teaching.
Following Allen’s arrest, media attention focused on his neighborhood in Torrance, where he had resided with his family for six months. Neighbors described the family as friendly and peaceful, expressing surprise at the unfolding events. The incident at the Washington Hilton, reminiscent of a past assassination attempt on President Reagan, was the first such occurrence during Trump’s attendance at the dinner.
President Trump lauded the swift response of the Secret Service and emphasized the unity displayed in the face of adversity. Mayor Muriel Bowser indicated no suspicion of additional accomplices in the incident. The British ambassador and other guests at the event conveyed gratitude for the security response and well wishes for the injured officer.
The timing of the armed assault, just prior to a state visit by foreign dignitaries, raised concerns about security arrangements. Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the incident’s impact on the upcoming visit. The suspect is facing charges related to the use of firearms during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer, with a scheduled arraignment in federal court.
