One of Spain’s prominent bullfighters sustained a severe injury when a bull’s horn punctured his rectum with a 10cm gore. José Antonio Morante Camacho, also known as Morante de la Puebla, faced ‘Clandestino’ at La Maestranza bullring in Seville during the April Fair event. Morante, hailed as the ‘king of bullfighters’, was gored by the bull as he tried to control it, resulting in a distressing scene captured on video. The bull’s horn struck him in the buttocks, causing a significant tear in his trousers and leading to visible distress. Earlier in the event, Morante had a minor injury when a bull grazed his ear. He underwent a two-hour operation at the hospital to repair a 10cm wound in his rectum and anal sphincter muscles. The procedure involved washing the wound and reconstructing the rectal wall and sphincter apparatus. The incident overshadowed the event, raising concerns about Morante’s recovery. Prior to the accident, Morante had made a symbolic gesture by cutting off his traditional bullfighter’s pigtail, generating anticipation for his return to the ring. Despite the unfortunate injury, Morante had drawn a large crowd eagerly awaiting his comeback at the sold-out show.
