Brave bystanders intervened to prevent a man from escaping after he reportedly struck a child with an e-bike and engaged in a disturbing altercation in a road rage incident. The 15-year-old boy was allegedly hit by a white Volkswagen in a shocking event that unfolded in Sydney, Australia. Witnesses described the car as being on top of the e-bike, with the driver purportedly running over the boy’s legs.
Police responded to the incident, captured partly on camera, in North Curl Curl, Sydney. According to New South Wales Police, the driver allegedly made a disrespectful hand gesture towards a group of teens before speeding off in his vehicle. A verbal argument ensued between the driver and the 15-year-old boy, with the driver reportedly throwing a water bottle at the teen before driving away. The boy then threw the same bottle back at the car, but it missed.
The driver allegedly struck the teen, causing him to fall from the e-bike, before fleeing the scene. However, he was apprehended an hour later in Dee Why. The boy suffered significant leg injuries but was stabilized by paramedics and taken to Randwick Children’s Hospital for treatment.
A local witness, known as ‘Laura,’ recounted the events, stating that the driver swerved dangerously after an exchange involving a thrown bottle. She expressed shock at the incident, emphasizing that while e-bikes might be bothersome, resorting to running someone over was unacceptable.
The driver has been charged with various offenses, including driving recklessly causing bodily harm and negligent driving. He was granted bail and is scheduled to appear in Manly Local Court on May 20.
