Defiant snooker legend Ronnie O’Sullivan has issued a stern ultimatum to the sport’s governing bodies, demanding increased financial incentives to secure his participation in future tournaments. The seven-time world champion emphasized that he values his independence and that monetary considerations will heavily influence his decision to compete.
O’Sullivan’s stance was prompted by the abrupt cancellation of the lucrative Saudi Arabia Masters, a tournament that held substantial financial appeal. The snooker icon, who also operates a Snooker Academy in Riyadh, stressed that whether the event is held in Saudi Arabia or elsewhere, the financial offer must align with his expectations for him to commit his presence.
In his candid statement, O’Sullivan asserted, “It is a standard expectation that any tournament I attend must meet my financial requirements. If this condition is not met, I will not participate.” He reiterated that his financial terms apply universally, regardless of the event’s location, be it in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, China, or any other destination.
Addressing concerns about the impact on his Academy, O’Sullivan remained unfazed, indicating that he has alternative options available. While expressing hope for continued collaborations with Saudi Arabia, he emphasized that his decisions will be guided by the circumstances as they unfold.
Known for his selective approach to tournament participation, O’Sullivan emphasized that his involvement in future events will hinge on sponsorship support. He underscored his commitment to enjoying the game and maintaining a balanced perspective, emphasizing that his passion for snooker remains undiminished.
Following his recent loss at the World Championship to John Higgins, O’Sullivan acknowledged the defeat but highlighted his improved resilience in handling setbacks. The veteran player expressed satisfaction with his performance and indicated his readiness to return to competitive action, including an upcoming appearance at the World Seniors Championship at the Crucible.
As O’Sullivan prepares for his next engagements, including potential returns to Sheffield and Ireland, his focus remains on maintaining a healthy work-life balance while meeting his professional commitments. The snooker icon’s unwavering dedication to the sport, coupled with his insistence on fair financial terms, underscores his unique approach to competition.
