Donald Trump recently made a joke similar to one cracked by Jimmy Kimmel, which led the President to call for Kimmel’s dismissal. In a speech welcoming King Charles to the US, Trump humorously mentioned his parents’ 63-year marriage, quipping to Melania that they wouldn’t surpass that record. Melania did not visibly react to the jest, reminiscent of Kimmel’s recent controversial quip that sparked backlash from the First Lady and Trump’s associates.
During a segment on his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the host humorously remarked on Melania’s appearance, likening her glow to that of an expectant widow. Kimmel later clarified that the joke was light-hearted, referencing the age gap between Trump and Melania.
Following the White House Correspondents’ Dinner where a gunman targeted Trump, Melania and Trump’s allies misconstrued Kimmel’s joke as inciting violence. Melania condemned the joke as divisive and harmful to American politics, while Trump took to Truth Social to denounce it as a “disgraceful call to violence” and demanded Kimmel’s immediate termination by Disney and ABC.
In response to the controversy, the Federal Communications Commission swiftly initiated a review of ABC’s broadcasting licenses. However, Disney and ABC have not yielded to Trump’s pressure to fire Kimmel. This is not the first time Kimmel faced backlash, as he was previously suspended briefly for upsetting MAGA supporters with remarks about activist Charlie Kirk.
