A colleague testified in court that a teacher, Jamie Varley, confessed to struggling with caring for an adopted baby who later died under suspicious circumstances. Varley allegedly disclosed “harmful thoughts” towards the 13-month-old baby to Janet Gee, his coworker at a high school where they both worked. Despite Varley claiming the baby drowned accidentally, a post-mortem examination revealed 40 injuries on the child’s body, contradicting Varley’s account.

Both Varley and his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, are facing charges related to sexual offenses against the child. Gee recounted an incident where Varley visited her home with the baby, expressing distress and mentioning harmful thoughts of drowning or suffocating the child. Varley assured Gee that he would not act on these thoughts and had informed his employer about his struggles.

Preston Davey, the adopted baby, had a troubled history before living with Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley. Varley took a year off from work to care for Preston but reportedly faced challenges as a first-time parent. In the months leading up to Preston’s death, he allegedly suffered ill-treatment, sexual abuse, and physical assault, resulting in numerous injuries.

Following Preston’s tragic death, Varley provided conflicting explanations for the baby’s injuries, including a fractured elbow. Despite Varley’s claim of an accidental fall in the bath, the child was found dry upon arrival at the hospital, raising suspicions of foul play. The post-mortem examination revealed multiple non-accidental injuries, with the cause of death attributed to airway obstruction from smothering or foreign objects inserted into his mouth.

Varley denies charges of murder, manslaughter, assault, cruelty to a child, and other offenses, while McGowan-Fazakerley denies allegations of child cruelty and sexual assault. The court proceedings continue as more details emerge surrounding the tragic case.
