“Garage Customer Jailed for Bulldozer Rampage”

Published on

An irate garage customer, Darren Coffey, received an 18-month prison sentence for stealing a 24-ton bulldozer and causing significant damage during a destructive spree in Wolverhampton. The 41-year-old, who was intoxicated with drugs and alcohol, took the £385,000 Caterpillar machine from his workplace on November 8 last year, leading to chaos and over £8,000 in damages over nearly three hours.

Coffey’s reckless driving rampage finally ended after colliding with a Royal Mail delivery truck, which authorities had strategically placed to halt his path. In court, Coffey pleaded guilty to various charges, including dangerous driving, driving without a license or insurance, criminal damage, and vehicle theft.

During the sentencing at Wolverhampton Crown Court, Judge David Perry emphasized the severity of Coffey’s actions, stating that his conduct had caused widespread disruptions to road users. The court learned that Coffey had previously threatened to damage a vehicle owned by Willenhall Autos, leading to the destructive chain of events involving the stolen bulldozer.

Despite pleas for leniency due to his history of substance abuse and mental health issues, Coffey was sentenced to 18 months in prison, with a requirement to serve at least 40% of the term before potential release on license. Additionally, he faced a lengthy driving ban and mandatory retesting upon eventual return to driving privileges.
