A suspect in Golders Green was apprehended by law enforcement with the assistance of a heroic patrol officer affiliated with the Jewish community safety group Shomrim. Volunteer Yonathan Elkouby collaborated with two Metropolitan police officers to subdue the alleged assailant following an incident where two individuals were stabbed outside a synagogue.
Elkouby recounted the confrontation, mentioning, “I successfully blocked his advance, and with the police’s help, we managed to restrain him. He locked eyes with me at one point and then lunged towards me.” Shomrim, which translates to “watchers” or “guards” in Hebrew, is often likened to a private law enforcement entity due to their distinctive attire, which includes stab-proof vests and yellow caps. They conduct routine patrols in various areas of north and east London and operate a 24-hour emergency line resembling 999 services.
Despite working in coordination with the Met Police, Shomrim lacks legal authority and operates as a charitable organization funded solely through private donations, without government support. Although primarily serving the Jewish community, they extend their assistance to all community members regardless of faith. Shomrim branches are established in Jewish neighborhoods globally, with the NW London branch originating in 2008 in response to a surge in criminal activities in the vicinity.
The organization conducts safety patrols six nights a week, pausing only for Shabbat and High Holidays, with volunteers receiving training from the Metropolitan Police Counter Terrorism Command. Shomrim emphasizes that their team comprises unpaid male and female volunteers dedicated to safeguarding the local neighborhood and aiding in the apprehension of numerous criminals annually.
Shomrim officer Ben Grossnass, aged 40, has responded to several serious incidents recently, including the destruction of four private Jewish ambulances near the site of the latest attack. Grossnass stressed the importance of Shomrim’s role in combating hate crimes, protecting children, and locating missing individuals amidst rising antisemitism. He advocated for enhanced government support to bolster their efforts in ensuring community safety.
Expressing concerns for his children’s safety in the current climate, Ben urged for government assistance to provide a secure future for all. Shomrim North West confirmed the recent attack as a terrorist act and praised their colleagues for their swift actions alongside the authorities. They announced heightened patrols and security measures while urging the public to report any suspicious activities.
Shomrim’s proactive approach extends to aiding victims of hate crimes, guiding them through legal proceedings, and achieving higher prosecution rates compared to national averages. The organization’s volunteers undergo rigorous training, including counter-terrorism, first aid, and crime prevention, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police. They operate primarily in specific London areas, complementing the Metropolitan Police’s efforts in maintaining community safety and responding swiftly to incidents.
