Tensions rose as Sir Keir Starmer arrived to meet with local Jewish leaders today, with a crowd of approximately 200 people surging forward and being restrained by numerous police officers. They gathered outside while the Prime Minister spent a longer-than-expected hour-and-a-half at the community center in Golders Green.
While some attendees were surprised and appreciative of Starmer’s visit and extended stay, much of the crowd displayed anger, reminiscent of the previous day’s incident where they expressed frustration towards Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley and other establishment figures.
During the gathering, a man confronted protesters who were chanting derogatory remarks about Starmer, emphasizing the impact of their words in the presence of media and cameras. He defended Starmer’s efforts amid challenging circumstances, urging caution in communication. The heated exchange lasted for about 20 minutes before Starmer’s departure back to Downing St.
Protests were orchestrated with organized chants resembling those heard at football matches as the Prime Minister’s convoy arrived at Pearl House in Golders Green around mid-day. Various chants, including “Keir Starmer’s a traitor” and “we’re on the charge with Nigel Farage,” were heard, with some individuals discouraging support for the Reform leader who had visited earlier.
Different groups within the protest sang and displayed banners with critical messages targeting Starmer, leading to the reinforcement of police presence to ensure his safe departure. Despite some confrontations and demands for Starmer to show himself, others defended his engagement with the community and urged for understanding.
After the demonstration concluded, some participants remained to express gratitude towards the police for their handling of the situation.
