Claire Freemantle, aged 49, is facing charges for causing death and serious injury due to dangerous driving following a tragic incident where a 44 collided with a primary school in Wimbledon, located in south London, in July 2023.

Scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday, June 16, Freemantle’s case has been confirmed by Commander Charmain Brenyah, who heads the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command. Brenyah expressed condolences to the affected families and highlighted the comprehensive reinvestigation conducted by detectives leading to the charges.

Acknowledging the ongoing Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation into the initial inquiry, Brenyah expressed regret for any shortcomings in the handling of the incident and its impact on those involved. She emphasized the importance of allowing the legal processes and independent scrutiny to proceed while announcing a strategic overhaul within the Roads and Transport Policing Command to enhance the effectiveness of responding to fatal and serious collisions, aiming for improved support and outcomes for victims and their families.

This development underscores the commitment to improving investigative procedures and support mechanisms in such cases, ensuring better outcomes for all parties involved.
