A Rabbi in Golders Green expressed that the recent stabbing incident involving two Jewish men was anticipated, highlighting the ongoing issue of antisemitism. Rabbi Sam Fromson, aged 37, emphasized the increased security measures at Jewish institutions to combat the rising attacks targeting the community. He noted the enhanced security at Jewish schools in the UK, including the deployment of guards and advanced technology, in response to multiple assaults.
Despite the heightened security measures, Rabbi Fromson emphasized the need to address antisemitism effectively. The alleged attacker, Essa Suleiman, aged 45, is accused of attempting to murder Shloime Rand, 34, and Norman Shine, 76, in North London. Following the attack, both victims were hospitalized, with Mr. Rand being discharged while Mr. Shine, who sustained a neck injury, remains under medical care.
Reflecting on the prevailing atmosphere within the community, Rabbi Fromson described a prevailing sense of anger and sorrow due to the increased security measures. He referred to past attacks, such as the 2025 Manchester synagogue incident and the Hazola ambulance attack in March, underscoring the persistent threat faced by the Jewish community.
Rabbi Fromson highlighted the additional security measures implemented by Jewish schools, including uniformed guards, Airgate systems, and parent rotas to ensure safety. He emphasized the daily reality faced by young children attending Jewish schools due to security concerns, attributing the additional costs to the Jewish community.
Despite the recent escalation in security measures, Rabbi Fromson noted that this issue has persisted for decades, recalling his own experiences as a child. He emphasized the importance of education in combating antisemitism, advocating for programs that address the root causes and promote understanding and empathy, particularly among younger generations and university campuses.
The alleged assailant from Golders Green appeared in court, where it was revealed that he had attempted to murder a longtime acquaintance before the attack on the Jewish men. Essa Suleiman, accompanied by security guards, appeared composed during the court hearing and was remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings.
