A young British couple is potentially facing a lengthy prison sentence of up to 30 years for allegedly trying to sneak two suitcases filled with cannabis into the United Kingdom.

The couple, Holly Cooper and Taylor Johnson, both aged 20, were apprehended in Istanbul, Turkey, while on a flight originating from Thailand. Authorities intercepted them just before they were about to board their connecting flight to London.

Subsequent to their interrogation, the pair was placed in a holding cell where Taylor reportedly suffered physical assault from Turkish individuals, according to sources close to his family.

Originally from Wednesbury in the West Midlands, the couple was later transferred to a different detention facility. However, their trial might not take place for about a year, and they are currently without private legal representation, instead being assisted by a public legal team.

Friends of the couple are now rallying to raise funds for their legal expenses as their worried families anxiously await updates. If convicted, the pair could face a mandatory imprisonment term ranging from 10 to 30 years.

A family friend described the couple as “good kids,” acknowledging their mistake while attributing their actions to being influenced and manipulated by more significant criminal entities. Concerns are mounting as they remain isolated in a Turkish prison, with reports of Taylor’s physical altercation. The families are distraught over the situation.

A spokesperson from the FCDO stated that they are offering assistance to the two detained British nationals in Turkey and their families, and are actively engaged with local authorities.
