“Poll Shows Support for Social Media Ban for Under 16s”

Published on

A recent poll conducted for The Mirror reveals that a majority of adults, around two-thirds, support the idea of implementing a social media ban for individuals under the age of 16. This push for stricter regulations comes as concerns grow over the uncontrolled online environment that children are exposed to through their devices.

Interestingly, the survey found that women are slightly more inclined towards supporting the ban, with 68% in favor compared to 63% of men. The poll also highlighted varying degrees of support based on political affiliations, showing that 67% of Labour voters and 77% of Conservative voters are in favor of the proposed ban, while 58% of Reform UK supporters also back the idea, despite Nigel Farage advocating against it.

While there is a growing call for action to address online safety concerns, the government is cautious not to rush into a complete social media ban for under 16s. Instead, they have initiated a consultation to explore various online safety measures, including potential bans, curfews, and app restrictions for minors.

One of the key aspects under consideration is the enhancement of age verification methods to prevent children from bypassing restrictions using VPNs. The consultation, which has already garnered over 60,000 responses, is set to conclude in the summer.

Advocates for stricter regulations argue that the need for action is urgent, pointing to the known dangers of the current online landscape. However, there are concerns that an outright ban could drive young individuals towards more obscure online spaces.

The momentum for implementing stricter regulations has intensified following Australia’s recent ban on social media for under 16s, with other European countries like Spain and Greece also hinting at similar measures. In response to mounting pressure, Education Minister Olivia Bailey has pledged to introduce some form of age or functionality restrictions in the UK.

Despite efforts to enforce age checks and enhance safety features, loopholes persist, as evidenced by research showing that a significant number of young adolescents are still able to access restricted platforms. To address these challenges, Ofcom has mandated social media platforms to implement robust age verification processes as part of the Online Safety Act.

The debate on social media regulations has been fueled by personal tragedies, such as the case of Ellen Roome, a bereaved mother who lost her 14-year-old son to a suspected online challenge. Roome emphasizes the urgent need for safeguarding children online and advocates for raising the minimum age for accessing harmful social media platforms to 16.

However, critics caution against viewing a ban as a panacea, highlighting the importance of holding tech companies accountable for ensuring child safety online. They argue for comprehensive legislation that prioritizes child protection and forces tech firms to prioritize safety over profits.

In response to the growing concerns, a government spokesperson has affirmed the commitment to fostering a healthy relationship between children and social media. The ongoing consultation aims to gather insights on various proposals, including age limits, enhanced safety features, and potential bans, with the goal of swiftly implementing effective measures to protect children online.
