At E-ACT Willenhall Academy, the day kicks off with lively 90s dance music and the hustle and bustle of students filling the halls by 8 am. The school’s breakfast club sees approximately 400 students each morning, engaging in various activities like revising, socializing, or gearing up for sports using the grab-and-go option.

Jade, an 11-year-old year 7 student, enjoys grabbing a bagel at the breakfast club, emphasizing the importance of having a meal together with friends before starting the day. She highlights that some students may struggle with food insecurity at home, making access to school meals crucial for energy and focus during school hours.

For 16-year-old Robert, about to tackle his GCSEs, having breakfast at school, including bagels, toast, and squash, is a routine that helps him not only physically but also emotionally. He notes the positive impact of the breakfast club in fostering social interactions and supporting mental well-being.

As the Labour government nears its second election anniversary, it prioritizes the nutritional needs of children and youth to enhance health and social mobility. Initiatives like expanding free school meals eligibility for half a million more children from September showcase the government’s commitment to addressing food security issues.

Recent government announcements indicate a nationwide revamp of school food standards for healthier meal options, along with the launch of 500 new free breakfast clubs. However, concerns raised by Magic Breakfast underscore the urgent need for extending breakfast programs to teenagers to ensure comprehensive support for this age group.

Magic Breakfast’s latest report, titled “More Than Breakfast,” underscores the critical role of school breakfasts in teenagers’ overall well-being, educational performance, and social inclusion. The charity advocates for broader access to school breakfast provision for secondary-aged pupils to empower them for academic success and beyond.

In areas like Willenhall, where families face financial challenges, breakfast often becomes a luxury. Notably, over 40% of students at Willenhall Academy benefit from free school meals, provided in part by volunteer staff, students, and support from organizations like Magic Breakfast. The positive impact of the breakfast club on attendance rates and student well-being is acknowledged by school officials.

Head teacher Emma Clements emphasizes the transformative effect of the breakfast club on student performance and behavior, noting the improvements in attendance and concentration levels. The initiative not only addresses hunger but also strengthens teacher-student relationships and supports pastoral care within the school community.

Students like Isabella and Collins, who volunteer at the breakfast club, highlight the importance of starting the day with a nutritious meal for enhanced learning and focus throughout the day. Their testimonials underscore the positive outcomes of having access to breakfast at school for academic achievement and overall well-being.

The Department for Education underscores the government’s commitment to providing free school meals to eligible households, with a focus on lifting children out of poverty through various support programs, including free Breakfast Clubs and the National School Breakfast Programme. The government’s ongoing funding commitment aims to sustain these initiatives for the benefit of students across the country.

As the Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Act by the Labour party takes effect, Magic Breakfast calls for sustained government support beyond primary school age, emphasizing the need for continuous breakfast provision for all students. The charity’s advocacy aims to ensure that every child has access to breakfast, setting a positive tone for their learning journey and overall development.
