“Arrowe Park Hospital Prepares for Cruise Ship Evacuees”

Published on

Flashbacks to the Covid pandemic arise as Arrowe Park Hospital on the Wirral, previously used to house evacuees from Wuhan during the coronavirus outbreak, is now preparing to accommodate British passengers from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak. The hospital, known for hosting British citizens returning from Wuhan in January 2020 for quarantine, is now welcoming cruise ship passengers affected by the hantavirus situation.

The MV Hondius, with no symptomatic passengers according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), has docked in Tenerife for evacuation. UK government teams are set to evacuate 147 individuals, including 22 Britons, from the cruise ship within 24 hours due to anticipated weather delays.

The UN health agency reported six confirmed hantavirus cases linked to the Hondius, with eight cases in total, including three deaths. Among these cases, three British nationals were identified by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).

Despite concerns, health officials in the UK assure the public of a low risk. Arrowe Park Hospital’s role during the early stages of the Covid pandemic, nicknamed ‘Camp Corona,’ involved diverse challenges, including managing quarantine logistics and ensuring proper care for individuals from varied backgrounds.

During the 2020 quarantine period, Arrowe Park staff faced multiple challenges, including managing supplies, ventilation, food services, and educating guests on virus prevention measures. The quarantine experience included adjustments in food provisions and leisure activities to accommodate the diverse needs of the individuals housed at the facility.

Upon completion of the evacuation process, passengers will undergo clinical assessments and testing at Arrowe Park in separate, designated areas. Any individuals showing symptoms will be swiftly transferred to appropriate medical facilities.

In a separate operation, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) deployed a specialist Army team to Tristan da Cunha to provide medical assistance to a British national suspected of having a hantavirus infection. This emergency response marked the first time medical personnel were parachuted in for humanitarian support on the remote island.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the priority of ensuring the safety of all British citizens and coordinating closely with international authorities and local administrations to provide necessary support and information to those impacted by the ongoing situations.
