Scarlett Moffatt recently shared a poignant conversation she had with a close friend during the challenging time she faced with her ‘miracle baby’ Jude. Jude Xavier Dobinson was born prematurely in June 2023 after Scarlett’s four-year struggle with fertility alongside her partner, Scott Dobinson. Despite referring to Jude as her “miracle baby,” Scarlett disclosed a heartfelt remark made by her friend Emma during their time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Appearing briefly on the CBeebies Parenting Helpline podcast hosted by Holly Hagan-Blyth and BBC Radio 1’s Charlie Hedges with special guest Dr. Frankie Harrison, Scarlett recounted the conversation with her friend. Emma expressed her struggle in knowing how best to support Scarlett and Scott during their NICU experience.
Dr. Frankie, a clinical psychologist and mother who also had a child in the NICU, offered insights on how to effectively assist friends or family members in similar situations. She emphasized avoiding phrases like “at least” and shared her personal difficulty with comments like “he couldn’t wait to meet you.” Dr. Frankie stressed the importance of creating a supportive environment where individuals can freely express their feelings.
Additionally, Dr. Frankie highlighted the value of practical gestures from loved ones, such as providing meals, ensuring self-care, and practical support like doing laundry. She emphasized the significance of acknowledging the challenges and creating a safe space for open conversations.
In sharing her experience, Scarlett aimed to raise awareness of the complexities faced by parents in NICU situations and the importance of genuine support and understanding from friends and family.
