In a remarkable turn of events, a five-year-old boy named Toma-Alexandru Zerestea, also known as Alex, was found safe and sound after being missing for almost three days in a forest known for its bear population. The incident occurred in the Ruscă region near Sebeșu de Jos, Romania, last Monday while his father was occupied repairing an electric fence.
Young Alex had strayed into the woods unnoticed, prompting a massive search effort involving numerous rescue teams, including police, firefighters, mountain rescue squads, volunteers, and soldiers. The operation utilized various resources such as search dogs, drones, and thermal imaging technology to navigate the rugged terrain.
The forest, teeming with large predators and exacerbated by recent harsh weather conditions, added urgency to the search. Fortunately, on Wednesday around 1 pm, a Black Hawk helicopter from the Ministry of Internal Affairs located the boy approximately 1.5 miles from his disappearance point.
Mihail Soare, part of the search-and-rescue team, was lowered by a trolley to reach the child, who was found safe among trees. Soare stayed with Alex, providing warmth and comfort until ground assistance arrived.
Expressing his emotions, Soare remarked, “It is a very emotional moment, I did not think I would ever live something like this. I have two children of my own, the emotion was overwhelming.”
Following the rescue, Alex was taken to Sibiu Clinical Paediatric Hospital for evaluation, where doctors confirmed his stable condition with only minor exhaustion and exposure issues. The father, overjoyed at the reunion with his son, described his feelings as “shaking with happiness.”
Authorities hailed the outcome as miraculous given the perilous environment of the Carpathian forest. While police are conducting an investigation into the incident, initial findings suggest that the boy had simply wandered off on his own.
