A convict has been sentenced to an additional four years in prison for assaulting another inmate by cutting his neck. John Henry Sayers, known as the ‘Godfather of Newcastle,’ was attacked by Donald Gaote-Oueyeya at HMP Frankland in April last year, leaving him hospitalized.
Gaote-Oueyeya, 26, who was serving a life sentence for a previous crime, attacked Sayers with a makeshift blade during a prison activity session at HMP Frankland. Sayers suffered multiple cuts, including a deep laceration to his neck, and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment. The weapon used in the attack was not recovered.
During the incident, a prison officer also sustained injuries while trying to intervene but Gaote-Oueyeya expressed regret for harming the officer unintentionally. In court, the officer described the impact of the incident on him and expressed concerns about safety in the prison environment.
In his defense, Gaote-Oueyeya’s lawyer highlighted his fear of retaliation for seeking help from authorities. The judge acknowledged Gaote-Oueyeya’s prior good behavior as a prisoner and expressed hope for his rehabilitation after being transferred to a different facility.
Gaote-Oueyeya, appearing via video link from HMP Long Lartin, was sentenced to four years for intentional wounding and nine months for causing bodily harm, to be served concurrently with his existing sentence.
