Pictures have been revealed showcasing the interior of a luxury motorhome valued at £124,000 that was acquired by former SNP leader Peter Murrell. Murrell, who served as the party’s chief executive, made a court appearance in Edinburgh today in handcuffs following his admission of embezzling over £400,000 from party funds. The prosecution detailed how he used SNP finances to support a lavish lifestyle over a decade. The funds misappropriated were primarily sourced from membership fees, donations, and other contributions.
The Crown Office disclosed images of the opulent motorhome, equipped with Molton Brown toiletries, which was confiscated by authorities with only four miles on the odometer. It was described as a “van” rather than a motorhome in official records and had not been utilized or seen by any other party members or staff. Additionally, during a search of Murrell’s residence, police discovered a £3,000 robotic lawnmower falsely classified in accounting records as legal fees.
It was revealed that Murrell engaged in fraudulent accounting practices and fabricated invoices to conceal his illicit activities while making a series of purchases. Among the items acquired using party funds were high-end watches, luxury pens, and expensive household items. He also misrepresented a transaction to purchase a Jaguar car, which was later sold at a significant loss. Furthermore, Murrell’s spending included various personal items like hand cream, household staples, and a pricey toilet seat.
Following his confession, scrutiny has intensified on Nicola Sturgeon, who denies any involvement in her ex-husband’s crimes. Sturgeon, the former Scottish First Minister, emphasized her lack of responsibility for his actions and refused to apologize for his wrongdoing. Although Sturgeon was questioned by the police in connection with the SNP’s financial affairs, she was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Calls have emerged for an independent inquiry into the SNP’s financial affairs amid the ongoing scandal. Murrell, attired in formal attire, has been remanded in custody until his sentencing scheduled for June 23.
