“Admiral Urges PM: Strengthen UK Defense, Face ‘Moscow Test'”

Published on

Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the former Chief of the Defence Staff, has emphasized that Andy Burnham, if elected as Prime Minister, should approach his role with a level of authority akin to a wartime leader. Radakin urged Burnham to honor Keir Starmer’s commitment to bolster defense spending, stressing the necessity of a rigorous evaluation, dubbed the “Moscow test,” for policy decisions. The impending release of the long-delayed defense investment plan (Dip) by the government, under the leadership of Starmer, has put pressure on the new Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis to address funding challenges following the resignations of his predecessors amid a funding dispute.

Sir Tony emphasized the critical need for the future Prime Minister to meet Starmer’s target of increasing defense expenditure to 3.5% of GDP by 2035, underscoring that Britain’s military capabilities are currently insufficient. He emphasized the importance of projecting strength to Moscow, demonstrating commitment to NATO, nuclear prowess, and a strong alliance with the United States for national security.

In a direct message to Burnham, Sir Tony stressed the paramount importance of investing in national security, likening the responsibilities to that of a wartime leader. He warned of the risks associated with inadequate defense spending, highlighting potential strains on alliances, particularly with the United States. The urgent call for bolstering armed forces operations and maintenance to enhance readiness was reiterated, emphasizing the need for essential resources to maintain operational capabilities across all military sectors.

Reports indicate that Burnham has approved the Dip, with additional funding secured by Jarvis, bringing the total closer to £15 billion over the next four years. However, this falls significantly short of the £28 billion estimated by military leaders as necessary for ensuring Britain’s preparedness for combat. Notably, the UK Commando Force is set to receive a £500 million boost, including enhancements such as high-speed boats and strike drones to fortify the elite unit.
