Yellowknife locals will soon have more flight options as Air North reveals plans to expand its services to and from the city. The Yukon-based airline disclosed on Wednesday that it will introduce year-round flights connecting Yellowknife and Whitehorse, as well as Yellowknife and Edmonton starting in December 2026.
Ben Ryan, Chief Commercial Officer of Air North, mentioned that they have received requests from sports organizations for flights to Edmonton to facilitate weekend travel for large groups attending events. Additionally, the flights between Whitehorse and Yellowknife aim to meet the escalating demand for business travel between the two northern cities.
This expansion aligns with the federal government’s focus on northern economic development and follows a recent memorandum of understanding signed by the premiers of the three territories to establish a potential territorial trade zone. Ryan expressed optimism, stating, “The federal government’s interest in the Arctic, coupled with new investments and the MOU among the territories, fosters a sense of momentum and confidence.”
Air North also revealed plans to reinstate its flight service between Yellowknife and Vancouver later this month, which was previously available earlier this year. Moreover, seasonal flights from Yellowknife to Victoria and Kelowna, with a connection at the Vancouver airport, will be offered this winter from December to March to cater to the aurora tourism season in the N.W.T.
Ryan highlighted the increasing interest among northerners in traveling to Victoria and Kelowna, stating that the expansion will appeal to various groups, including families, young individuals, students, sports teams, and couples. He also emphasized the potential for business travel into the territory during the week.
Furthermore, Air North announced the addition of flights between Yellowknife and Toronto, with up to three weekly flights scheduled between June and October 2026, along with extra flights planned for this winter from December 15 to January 6 and February 16 to March 24.
