“Steinbach Police Issue Alert on Overpayment Scams”

Published on

Police authorities in Steinbach, Manitoba, issue a cautionary alert against overpayment scams following reports of a fraudulent donation cheque sent to a local charity. The Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue faced a potential overpayment scam last spring when an individual under the alias “Kevin Vance Owens” initiated contact via email expressing interest in making a substantial donation by cheque. After the cheque was deposited, the sender claimed an error in the amount sent, requesting a refund of the excess funds. However, upon investigation, it was discovered that the cheque was counterfeit, preventing the charity from falling victim to the scam.

Michelle Neufeld, President of the animal rescue, emphasized the importance of verifying transactions before issuing refunds, highlighting the deceptive tactics employed by scammers. Although the charity did not suffer financial losses, they were able to identify the scammer’s name and actions, avoiding any monetary transfers. Neufeld emphasized the significance of vigilance and thorough verification processes to safeguard against fraudulent activities.

Furthermore, Neufeld outlined revised protocols for the charity, emphasizing the necessity of confirming cheque clearances before processing transactions. Steinbach RCMP Staff Sgt. Mike Maxwell acknowledged an increase in scam reports, including overpayment schemes, urging individuals to remain cautious and seek assistance from authorities when faced with suspicious requests. Maxwell advised individuals to exercise caution, refrain from rushed decisions, and report any potential scams promptly to prevent financial losses.

In a separate incident, Earl Funk, Mayor of Steinbach and proprietor of Earl’s Meat Market, recounted a cyber scam that resulted in significant financial losses for the business. The market’s bookkeeper received an email purportedly from Funk, requesting an electronic payment for an invoice, contrary to the usual payment method using cheques. Despite efforts to halt the payment, a portion of the funds was successfully transferred, prompting Funk to express feelings of violation and urging enhanced cybersecurity measures to prevent future occurrences.

Funk emphasized the implementation of stricter payment approval processes within the business to enhance security measures and prevent fraudulent activities. The incident served as a wake-up call for the company, prompting them to reinforce internal controls and adopt enhanced verification procedures to mitigate the risk of cyber scams. Through increased vigilance and stringent verification protocols, businesses and individuals can protect themselves against evolving cyber threats and financial fraud schemes.
