“Alberta Votes to Remain in Canada, Business Leaders Welcome Certainty”

Published on

Business leaders express relief as Alberta votes to remain in Canada, citing increased certainty for investors and a positive impact on the national economy. The president and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Deborah Yedlin, emphasized the significance of the vote, highlighting the potential economic benefits not only for Alberta but for the entire country.

During the provincial referendum, with one of the questions focusing on Alberta’s continuity within Canada, initial results show a strong majority in favor of remaining part of the country. The ongoing ballot counting process indicates a 75.5% lead for the remain side, with projections suggesting Alberta will maintain its status within Canada.

While some individuals supporting separation cited economic challenges as a factor, including the aftermath of the 2014 oil price crash, many business leaders backed staying in Canada. Concerns were raised prior to the referendum by organizations like the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and Alberta Chamber of Commerce, warning of potential uncertainties that a separation could bring, leading to investor hesitation.

A poll conducted among Calgary Chamber of Commerce members indicated a significant portion were willing to relocate their businesses if Alberta pursued separation. The referendum’s timing amidst global uncertainty and strained U.S.-Canada trade relations added further complexity for businesses and investors.

The immediate aftermath of the referendum brings a sense of normalcy for investors previously awaiting the outcome. However, despite the vote results, separatist sentiments persist, with a portion still advocating for an independent Alberta. The ongoing debate on separation could continue to impact business activities and policymaking in the province.

Looking back at Quebec’s independence referendum in 1995, which had lasting effects on business activities, Chief Economist Charles St-Arnaud suggests that the separatist conversation in Alberta may influence future investments depending on its prominence in mainstream politics.

As the focus shifts towards building a unified Canadian economy post-referendum, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce stresses the importance of addressing separatist concerns to ensure economic stability. With the majority of Albertans choosing to remain part of Canada, business leaders and investors are encouraged to move forward with renewed confidence in the country’s economic future.
