A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some major UK broadband providers are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. The study indicates that smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing larger brands by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value.
Issues with internet connectivity, such as frequent dropouts, slow download speeds, and service outages, are prevalent among broadband users. An overwhelming 91% of customers reported facing problems with their internet service in the past year, indicating a lack of trouble-free connections for most households.
Among the prominent providers, Sky and Virgin Media performed poorly in terms of frequent dropouts and slow speeds. Sky customers, in particular, expressed dissatisfaction with the broadband speed. Additionally, TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service also received negative feedback from consumers.
On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic emerged as top performers with fewer reliability issues compared to major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming rivals such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
The findings align with previous Which? research showing that smaller broadband firms consistently excel in reliability, customer service, and value for money compared to major providers in the UK. Which? advises households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if dissatisfied with their current service, recommending the use of Ofcom’s broadband checker for network availability.
Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized the importance of quality broadband services and urged customers to consider switching to companies that offer better service. In response, a spokesperson from Virgin Media highlighted the company’s ongoing investments in services and its positive performance in various broadband categories.
The report underscores the competitive landscape in the broadband market, empowering consumers to make informed choices for reliable and efficient internet services.
