Mitch Winehouse, the father of Amy Winehouse, has been criticized as a “bully” by the singer’s goddaughter following his unsuccessful High Court claim against two of the singer’s friends. Mitch, acting as the administrator of Amy’s estate, filed a lawsuit against Naomi Parry and Catriona Gourlay, alleging that they had profited from selling items that belonged to the late musician at auctions in the United States between 2021 and 2023.
Mitch accused Catriona and Naomi of hiding the sale of the items, a claim both individuals denied. The judge ruled in favor of the defendants, stating that Mitch could have discovered the disputed items with reasonable diligence.
Following the verdict, Dionne Bromfield, Amy’s goddaughter, praised Naomi and Catriona while criticizing Mitch as a “bully.” She commended the two friends for standing up for themselves and not allowing a bully to succeed.
One of the items sold by Amy’s friends was a silk minidress worn by the singer in her final performance before her untimely death at 27. Deputy High Court judge Sarah Clarke KC stated that neither Naomi nor Catriona intentionally hid the disputed items and criticized Mitch for failing to validate his claim before trial.
Judge Clarke acknowledged Mitch’s efforts to preserve Amy’s legacy through the Amy Winehouse Foundation but noted his sensitivity towards any perceived exploitation of Amy’s memory for financial gain. She described Mitch as dominating and unreliable, highlighting Amy’s generosity in routinely giving away clothing to friends.
Naomi expressed relief as the High Court cleared her of the allegations brought by Mitch, emphasizing the trust and loyalty in her relationship with Amy. She expressed gratitude to her legal team, witnesses, family, and fans for supporting her throughout the ordeal.
Mitch Winehouse was approached for comment on the matter.
