Andy Burnham Vows to Fight for Miners’ Pension Rights

Published on

Andy Burnham has pledged to continue his efforts to ensure that miners receive all the money owed to them regarding the Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme controversy. The Mayor of Greater Manchester met with former mineworkers in Makerfield, emphasizing the need for change within the Labour party to avoid its demise. Burnham, a potential leadership challenger to Keir Starmer, commended the Chancellor’s decision to allocate ÂŁ2.3 billion to members of the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme but suggested further action may be necessary.

Expressing his commitment, Burnham criticized the previous deal under the Tories, labeling it as unjust and vowed to advocate for the rightful distribution of funds. The Sunday Mirror has been a staunch supporter of the campaign for fair treatment of retired miners. The ongoing scandal traces back to 1994 when British Coal was privatized, leading to an agreement where any surpluses should be evenly split between the Treasury and scheme members.

After the meeting, Burnham highlighted the resilience and heritage of mining communities, reiterating his determination to correct the past injustices and revitalize the economy in Makerfield and beyond. With upcoming policy interventions focused on Makerfield, Burnham’s dedication to this cause remains steadfast. Having championed this issue for over two decades, Burnham has collaborated with various stakeholders, including former miners, widows, trade unions, and coalfield activists.
