Apprentice ‘Human Fireball’ Shares Survival Story

Published on

A young apprentice welder, who faced a life-altering workplace accident turning him into a ‘human fireball,’ shared his harrowing experience of the incident. Dwayne Bell, aged 17 at the time, suffered severe burns while working at a steel yard in Wigan. Engaged in a routine task of burning rubbish, the situation quickly spiraled into a nightmare when a massive fireball engulfed him, causing extensive burns to his face, chin, and hands.

The intensity of the blast resulted in third-degree burns, melting part of his nose and ear. Now 22, Dwayne is speaking out to warn other apprentices about the real risks present at work sites. Reflecting on the incident, he expressed gratitude for surviving, recalling the overwhelming heat that made him fear blindness amidst the chaos.

Describing the accident as inevitable, Dwayne emphasized the lack of supervision that led to his predicament. Feeling neglected and inadequately trained, he highlighted the negligence of the adults responsible for his safety. Despite receiving some basic instructions, he felt unprepared for the task that ultimately caused the catastrophic event.

Struggling to come to terms with the trauma, Dwayne recounted the moment when he found himself enveloped in flames, with his head and hands ablaze. Colleagues rushed to his aid, extinguishing the fire, preventing further damage. Despite the excruciating pain, he acknowledged the relief of still being able to see and not being blinded.

Following weeks of hospitalization and multiple surgeries, Dwayne returned home to face a long and painful recovery. Enduring physical and emotional challenges, he underwent skin grafts and continues to cope with the lasting effects of the accident. While his facial wounds have healed considerably, his hands remain heavily scarred, impacting his daily life and potential future endeavors.

Despite the ordeal, Dwayne sought legal assistance, leading to a substantial settlement without admission of liability. His lawyer emphasized the importance of proper training and supervision for apprentices to prevent such incidents in the future. Dwayne has since resumed welding with a different company, albeit with limitations due to the risk of triggering painful blisters from the tools.

Sharing his story as a cautionary tale, Dwayne hopes to raise awareness and prevent others from experiencing similar tragedies. Resolved to move forward, he aims to rebuild his life and pursue a sense of normalcy after the life-altering event. Qualfab Steel Ltd has been contacted for comment on the matter.
