An autopsy has revealed that the victims of Bryan Kohberger suffered greatly during the brutal attack at a student house share.
The University of Idaho students, Madison Mogen, 21, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, Ethan Chapin, 20, and Xana Kernodle, 20, were fatally wounded by multiple sharp-force injuries while three of them were asleep around 4 am on November 13, 2022. The details were disclosed in unsealed autopsy reports from the Ada County court.
Bryan Kohberger, a criminology student, received four consecutive life terms in prison after admitting to the murders. Investigations revealed that Kohberger had visited the students’ residence on several occasions before the tragic events.
The autopsy reports, conducted by Dr. Veena Singh, Spokane’s chief medical examiner, indicated that all victims sustained injuries consistent with a “Ka-Bar Full Size US Marine Corps Fighting Knife,” suspected to be the murder weapon. Additional wounds on the victims were likely caused by different parts of the same weapon.
Kaylee had blunt-force injuries to her face and was found with her mouth covered by an unidentified object. Xana, who was not in bed during the attack, suffered wounds to her arms and hands. A leather sheath matching the knife was discovered near Kaylee and Madison, with Kohberger’s DNA present on it.
Authorities apprehended Kohberger at his parents’ home in Pennsylvania on December 30, 2022. As the legal proceedings continue, more information is being made public regarding the case.
Kohberger, pursuing a PhD in criminology at Washington State University, chose to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty by firing squad. Recently, Idaho State Police released previously unseen crime scene images from the murders, which were temporarily accessible online before being removed.
These photos depicted blood-soaked bedding, blood smears on walls, furniture, and personal belongings, indicating signs of a struggle. Following the image release, Kristi, Kaylee’s mother, expressed her anger towards Kohberger in a Facebook post on January 30.
