British Columbia’s premier has pledged to assess the province’s emergency response in the aftermath of the uncontrollable Bald Range wildfire near Summerland. Meanwhile, the wildfire crews have managed to “hold” the Quilpituk Creek fire north of Kelowna within its existing boundaries. Although evacuation orders are still in place for that fire, evacuees are advised to prepare for potential re-entry.
The B.C. Wildfire Service is maintaining 24-hour operations to safeguard Highway 8 from the Ainslie Creek wildfire northwest of Merritt. Currently, over 20,000 individuals are under evacuation orders across the province, with an additional 10,000 on evacuation alert.
The rapid growth of the Bald Range fire took officials by surprise, surpassing the predictions of the BCWS models. Premier David Eby highlighted the need to reconsider emergency response strategies in light of this unexpected fire behavior, hinting at a potential new norm for fire speed in the region.
Penticton Indian Band Chief Greg Gabriel emphasized the importance of involving Indigenous communities in wildfire prevention efforts to address the underlying causes. While the extent of property damage caused by the 184.5-square-kilometer Bald Range fire remains unclear, specialized search-and-rescue teams have been mobilized for damage assessments.
Despite more than 100 wildfires burning in B.C., primarily in the southern region, some evacuees may soon be allowed to return home. The largest fire, the Pear Lake wildfire near Clinton, covers an expansive area of 1,568 square kilometers.
Residents displaced by the Quilpituk Creek wildfire are being advised to prepare for their return, as containment progress is made. Although several evacuation orders persist for the Kelowna fire, improved weather conditions are expected to aid firefighting efforts.
Efforts are underway to prevent the Ainslie Creek wildfire from impacting Highway 8 near Boston Bar. Highway closures due to the wildfires include Highway 97 between Peachland and Pyramid Picnic Area, with traffic diverted to Highway 33.
Highway closures north of Hope and Cache Creek are still in effect, with ongoing firefighting operations to safeguard key roadways.
