Baby Reindeer star Richard Gadd has opened up about his struggles with self-hate and an identity crisis in his twenties. The writer and actor revealed feeling imprisoned by overwhelmingly negative thoughts, making conversations challenging.

Gadd gained fame in 2024 with his series Baby Reindeer on Netflix, where he both wrote and starred in the acclaimed drama depicting his character, Donny, dealing with a stalker named Martha, played by Jessica Gunning.

Currently, Gadd is working on Half Man, a project he wrote and will star in, focusing on stepbrothers Ruben (played by Gadd) and Niall (portrayed by Jamie Bell), showcasing contrasting personalities of violence and sensitivity.

In a recent interview with NME, Gadd shared his ongoing battle with self-hate, emphasizing the importance of portraying such personal struggles on screen to remind others they are not alone in their experiences.

Despite societal challenges, Gadd expressed his belief in the fundamental decency of humanity amidst what he described as a crisis of alienation in our society.

The creation of Baby Reindeer stemmed from Gadd’s encounters with a female admirer and evolved into a successful stage show before becoming a hit TV series, winning six Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Writing by Gadd.

The show garnered attention from true crime enthusiasts trying to identify the real-life inspiration behind Martha, with Fiona Harvey, a London-based lawyer, emerging as the central figure, leading to a legal dispute between her and Netflix over the portrayal of events in the series.

Following a court ruling allowing Harvey to proceed with her defamation lawsuit against Netflix, it was clarified that the show’s depiction of events differed significantly from the actual incidents, emphasizing the distinction between fictional narrative and real-life actions.
