The national threat level in the UK has been raised from substantial to severe after a recent terror incident in north London. The Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) upgraded the threat level, indicating a high likelihood of an attack within the next six months. This decision comes in the wake of an antisemitic attack in Golders Green on Wednesday, where two Jewish men were stabbed. The Home Office cited a growing threat from Islamist and Extreme Right Wing elements within the UK as the reason for the heightened alert.
This increase brings the threat level to “severe” for the first time since November 2021, following previous incidents such as the Liverpool Women’s Hospital bombing and the murder of MP Sir David Amess, before it was downgraded to substantial in February 2022. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the recent attack as an act of terrorism and called for increased vigilance among the public, especially the Jewish community.
Mahmood announced additional funding to enhance security measures for Jewish communities, including increased policing at synagogues, schools, and community centers. She emphasized the government’s commitment to combatting antisemitism and urged the public to report any suspicious activities to the authorities. Opposition leader Keir Starmer also condemned the attack and pledged to tackle antisemitism vigorously, calling for unity in standing against hatred and bigotry.
To bolster security, the government unveiled a £25 million investment to enhance police patrols and safeguard key Jewish establishments. Additionally, new legislation will be expedited to address threats posed by individuals or groups acting on behalf of foreign states. The Home Secretary will receive enhanced powers to proscribe state-backed organizations deemed a threat to national security, providing law enforcement agencies with stronger tools to counter hostile activities.
Overall, the government and opposition leaders have united in denouncing the attack, emphasizing the need for collective action against antisemitism and reinforcing security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
