Backpack Rash Leads to Life-Saving Discovery

Published on

Kate Howson initially mistook an itchy red patch on her back for a rash caused by carrying a backpack while on holiday. However, this turned out to be a significant discovery for her. The 32-year-old, along with her partner Rhys, had been invited to attend two destination weddings, one in New Zealand in February 2024 and the other in Thailand at the end of the same month. To make the most of these events, the couple from Cardiff decided to take a break from work and embark on a travel adventure.

During their travels, Kate noticed an itch in the middle of her back where a mole was located. Concerned, she asked her partner to take a look, and he observed that the surrounding area appeared red. Assuming it was due to the backpack rubbing against her skin during their month-long journey, they sent a photo to Kate’s sister-in-law, a doctor, for advice. The doctor advised Kate to have it checked as soon as they returned home.

Upon returning in March, Kate noticed that the area had darkened and changed shape. She took a new photo to compare with the original, preparing to show it to her GP. Following a referral, she visited the dermatology department at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, where specialists warned her about a high likelihood of the growth being cancerous. Subsequently, the mole was removed and confirmed to be a melanoma.

Further tests revealed that the melanoma had progressed to stage three, requiring a sentinel lymph node biopsy to track its potential spread. The cancer had indeed metastasized, leading Kate to undergo targeted cancer drug treatment due to her specific genetic mutation. Concerned about the impact on her fertility, Kate and Rhys pursued IVF options before starting treatment, but unfortunately, they faced challenges due to low egg reserves.

After exhausting their IVF options, the couple decided to postpone their family plans and focus on Kate’s treatment. Throughout this difficult time, Kate received support and counseling from Tenovus Cancer Care services. Despite the emotional strain, Kate remains hopeful and emphasizes the importance of skin monitoring and early medical intervention. She also acknowledges the impact of her work in sharing stories and raising awareness.

Reflecting on her journey, Kate stresses the importance of sun safety and regular skin checks. She encourages others to monitor any changes in moles and seek prompt medical attention if needed. Kate’s experience has heightened her awareness of skin health and the need for vigilance, especially in the face of unexpected challenges.
