“Bank Holiday Weekend Travel Surge Expected: Plan Ahead!”

Published on

This upcoming bank holiday weekend is anticipated to see a surge in car journeys, with up to 23 million trips expected to be made. The combination of projected warm weather and the commencement of the half term holiday for numerous schools in England and Wales is likely to lead to heavier traffic on the roads. Additionally, with the final round of Premier League games scheduled for the weekend, drivers are being advised to plan their journeys in advance.

The AA, a motoring organization, has predicted that Friday will be the busiest day, with an estimated 23.4 million journeys, followed by 22.8 million on Saturday, and 22.4 million on both Sunday and the bank holiday Monday.

Most of the journeys are anticipated to be local, with approximately half of the respondents in an AA survey planning trips of up to 50 miles each day. Shopping is identified as the primary purpose for travel by 40% of drivers, closely trailed by visiting family or friends at 39%. Furthermore, around 23% are planning trips to DIY stores or garden centers, while 22% expect to travel for work.

According to separate research conducted by the RAC, 28% of drivers are increasingly concerned about the rising cost of fuel. The average price of petrol across the UK stands at 158.52p per liter, the highest since December 2022, while diesel is priced at 185.92p. Filling up a family car with unleaded petrol now costs £87, £14 more than this time last year, and over £102 for diesel, which is £26 more compared to last year.

Lee Morley, an expert patrol at the AA, stated, “A warm Bank Holiday weekend often prompts people to consider a last-minute getaway, a day trip to the coast, or visiting friends and family. When good weather follows an unsettled period, individuals are more inclined to make spontaneous plans, so drivers should be prepared for busy routes to fill up quickly.”

He added, “Sunday could pose additional challenges, with the final round of Premier League matches likely to increase traffic around stadiums, city centers, and major routes. Football enthusiasts, day-trippers, and families returning from short breaks may all be on the move simultaneously, so checking traffic conditions before setting off and allowing extra travel time is advisable.”

Morley further advised, “Before embarking on a journey, drivers should remember FLOWER – Fuel, Lights, Oil, Water, Electrics, and Rubber. These quick checks take only a few minutes but can help identify issues before they escalate into breakdowns, particularly when vehicles are carrying extra passengers, luggage, or pets over long distances.”

He also mentioned, “Given the persistent high fuel prices, drivers should strive to maximize fuel efficiency. Comparing prices before refueling, avoiding unnecessary weight, maintaining proper tire pressure, and driving smoothly can all contribute to reducing costs. Utilizing the AA App to locate cheaper fuel along the way can prevent overpaying while traveling.”

Popular travel spots during this period may include various destinations across the country.
