Barry McGuigan captured the nation’s admiration during his stint on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here alongside Coleen Rooney and McFly guitarist, Danny Jones in the 2024 season. Despite the positive experience, McGuigan contemplates a potential return to the show as the live All Stars final approaches.
Reflecting on his time in the jungle, the former world boxing champion expressed mixed feelings, stating, “I enjoyed it, but would I do it again? Probably not.” McGuigan recounted the challenges of enduring hunger during the show, emphasizing how the lack of successful trials often meant going without food.
The 65-year-old opened up about the significant weight loss he experienced in the jungle, losing a stone and a half during his stay. While acknowledging the incredible experience, McGuigan humorously admitted his struggles with the tasks, adding, “I was just rubbish, and I couldn’t see.”
McGuigan fondly recalled the camaraderie he shared with his fellow campmates, highlighting the friendships he formed with individuals like Danny, Melvin Odoom, and Alan from Coronation Street. However, his life has not been without its challenges, notably the tragic incident in 1982 where he inadvertently caused the death of his boxing opponent, Young Ali.
The emotional journey continued for McGuigan as he shared the heart-wrenching story of his daughter, Danika, who battled and overcame acute lymphoblastic leukaemia at a young age, only to later succumb to bowel cancer at 33. He revealed how watching Daniel Day-Lewis in a film inspired Danika to pursue acting.
Despite the highs and lows, McGuigan remains grateful for the experiences that have shaped his life, both in and out of the limelight.
