The victim of a recent stabbing incident in Belfast has emerged from an induced coma, but there are concerns about potential vision loss in his right eye, according to his family. Stephen Ogilvie sustained severe injuries, including losing his left eye and receiving deep cuts to his head, face, and back during the violent attack at Kinnaird Avenue in north Belfast.
Hadi Alodid, aged 30, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing and appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court. His next court appearance via videolink is scheduled for July 8.
Mr. Ogilvie’s family provided an update confirming his recovery from the induced coma and expressed gratitude for the support received following the attack. Despite their relief at his improved condition, they acknowledge that he still faces significant challenges ahead, including the potential loss of sight in his right eye.
The family issued a statement expressing their gratitude for the overwhelming kindness shown by numerous individuals, many of whom are unfamiliar with their family. Alodid, a Sudanese national, entered Northern Ireland after traveling from Paris to Dublin in February 2023, where he sought asylum and was granted permission to stay in the UK until 2028.
Following the circulation of a disturbing video of the stabbing incident, there were calls from prominent figures like Elon Musk and Tommy Robinson for public demonstrations. Subsequently, anti-immigration unrest erupted, resulting in property damage, arson attacks on homes, cars, and a bus, as well as racially motivated assaults on individuals.
Law enforcement authorities have made 35 arrests and charged 23 individuals in connection with the disorder that ensued after the incident. This situation is ongoing and continues to develop.
