A former detective revealed that a police chief once threatened to halt an investigation that ultimately led to the capture of a murderer central to a new Netflix series. Robert Napper fatally stabbed Rachel Nickell in July 1992 while she was walking on Wimbledon Common in South West London with her young son. During that time, another police unit was looking into a series of rapes committed by Napper, but they failed to connect him to the crimes due to missed opportunities.

Napper went on to commit more violent acts, including the killings of Samantha Bissett and her daughter in November 1993. He targeted numerous women along London’s Green Chain, with up to 86 reported incidents. Eventually, officers investigating the double murder in May 1994 made a crucial breakthrough after nearly closing the case. According to ex-Detective Sergeant Alan Jackaman, the superintendent overseeing the investigation wanted to end it due to lack of progress, but Jackaman insisted on continuing, emphasizing the urgency of capturing the perpetrator.

Despite earlier warnings and missed leads, Napper’s criminal activities continued, with further incidents of violence against women. His eventual arrest in 1994 came after meticulous forensic work that linked him to the crimes. Napper, a paranoid schizophrenic, was ultimately convicted in 2008 for Rachel’s murder, thanks to advances in forensic technology and persistent investigative efforts.
