Several theme parks are set to close following lackluster seasons, with one beloved park in the UK facing liquidation. Brean Theme Park in Somerset was handed over to liquidators earlier this year, joining a list of multiple parks shutting down.
In the US, Glenwood Caverns in Colorado filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in February due to financial and reputational issues. Six Flags, a prominent theme park company, announced the closure of six “underperforming” locations in 2026 after experiencing a loss exceeding $1.2 billion in 2025.
Wild Waves Theme and Water Park in Washington State, with almost 50 years of operation, has confirmed that its current season will be its last. Rising operational costs have led to the decision to close the park, which has been running since 1977 under Premier Parks management.
Premier Parks’ owner expressed gratitude to guests and the community for their support over the years but cited significant financial losses post-COVID reopening as the reason for discontinuing operations at the end of the 2026 season. The park’s final season began on May 23 and will conclude on November 1, with all rides and attractions operational during this time.
The park plans to celebrate its legacy with themed events and special promotions throughout its last operating season. Despite the closure, the amusement park will be replaced by a large warehouse, a decision that has faced criticism from locals who have cherished memories of the theme park.
Previous proposals for the site included a hotel and convention center, but the current owners are committed to a respectful transition while aiming to bring long-term benefits to the area. Details of the new project are still in the early stages, with a focus on enhancing the city and its surroundings as the plans progress through community reviews.
