Bestselling author Rebecca Yarros is making a comeback to contemporary romance with a new novel titled Peculiar Stars, following the success of her popular Empyrean fantasy series. Yarros, renowned for her novel Fourth Wing, unveiled the upcoming book in an exclusive appearance on TODAY on April 28, describing it as a “castaway romance” centered around survival, identity, and an unexpected bond.
The narrative revolves around Callista, a woman who survives a cyclone crash only to find herself marooned on a deserted island with her fiancé’s cousin. As they face dwindling chances of rescue over the passing months, they are thrust into close proximity, leading to a reluctant yet budding emotional connection.
The official synopsis reveals a slow-burning relationship as both characters initially resist their emotions. However, as time progresses and the outside world feels increasingly distant, a deeper connection blossoms between them.
“They resist their connection at first, but as months wear on, and the hope of rescue fades, something real starts taking shape, built on who they are when everything else is stripped away,” the synopsis details. “When they’re finally found, the world hasn’t changed. But they have.”
This new novel marks Yarros’s transition back to contemporary romance after the release of Onyx Storm, the third book in her Empyrean series. Yarros mentioned in an interview with Jenna Bush Hager that she alternates between fantasy and contemporary storytelling, with her last contemporary work, Variation, focusing on emotional narratives.
Yarros’s popularity has soared, driven by the success of her Empyrean series, which began with Fourth Wing and garnered a global following, notably on BookTok. Despite her rapid rise, Yarros has acknowledged the need to slow down her writing pace due to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, expressing a desire to strike a healthier work-life balance.
Peculiar Stars is set to be published on November 17, 2026, by Montlake, Amazon Publishing’s romance imprint, and is anticipated to captivate Yarros’s dedicated fanbase with its themes of isolation, forced proximity, and emotional evolution.
