“Beware: Britons Warned Against Barbecues Amid Wildfire Threat”

Britons are being cautioned against having barbecues or bonfires in light of numerous severe wildfires that have occurred.

The United Kingdom has already witnessed as many 30-degree Celsius days in 2026 as it did during the infamous year of 1976, according to the Met Office. This year’s third heatwave has brought scorching temperatures, leading to dry vegetation across the country and an increased risk of wildfires.

On Monday, temperatures soared to 30.1 degrees Celsius in Hurn, Dorset, marking the ninth consecutive day with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees somewhere in the country. The June heatwave also saw temperatures surpassing 30 degrees for seven consecutive days.

Fire and rescue teams are facing challenges as they combat wildfires, with seven English regions issued yellow heat-health alerts until Friday. The North West, South West, South East, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, and London have all received warnings from the UKHSA.

In North Wales, authorities evacuated dozens of homes near the village of Capelulo as they tackled a wildfire at Conwy Mountain. Matt Rowe, group manager for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, emphasized that the careless disposal of cigarettes or barbecues has been the primary cause of recent wildfires in the area.

Over 60 firefighters were deployed to battle a wildfire at Blackwater in Hampshire, near Camberley in Surrey, on Saturday. Mr. Rowe described the challenging firefighting conditions due to the rugged terrain and limited access.

With an extreme weather warning for wildfires in effect, authorities advise against having bonfires at home and recommend having water available when barbecuing. The National Fire Chiefs Council chairman, Phil Garrigan, highlighted the heightened risk of wildfires during the hot weather and urged the public to take precautions to prevent fire incidents.

The Met Office forecasts the heatwave to persist across much of the UK this week, with temperatures potentially reaching highs of 33 degrees Celsius in parts of southern-central England on Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to decrease by the latter part of the week, dipping to the mid to high-20s for many by Saturday.
