“Beware: iCloud Scammers Target Apple Users”

Published on

A fresh Apple scam has resurfaced, targeting individuals with a deceptive tactic related to low iCloud storage. Apple’s cloud storage service is essential to many iPhone users, serving as a digital backup for photos, documents, and important files, safeguarding them against accidental loss.

The convenience of iCloud simplifies the process of switching between devices like iPhones, iPads, and Macs by storing everything in a centralized location. However, the drawback lies in its limited storage capacity, prompting users to pay for additional space options.

Scammers are exploiting these storage limits by instigating fears of account blockage due to full storage, coaxing individuals into revealing personal and financial information. While iCloud scams are not unprecedented, Malwarebytes cybersecurity experts have noticed a rise in fake emails alleging users have depleted their storage space.

According to Malwarebytes, scammers are capitalizing on the emotional aspect of potentially losing precious photos to extract personal and financial details. The fraudulent messages, often posing as Apple notifications, claim that iCloud storage has reached its limit, halting file backups. Users are encouraged to upgrade their storage plan through a link leading to a counterfeit website aimed at stealing sensitive data.

Variants of these scams exist, all revolving around the same premise: making a small payment to prevent deletion of files in iCloud storage. These scam websites solicit personal and payment details for the alleged payment.

To enhance user safety, new guidelines emphasize that Apple does not send unsolicited emails regarding iCloud storage issues. Authentic notifications about nearing storage capacity appear within device settings or as official system alerts, not through unsolicited texts or emails with external links. Users are advised to directly check their storage status by accessing Settings on their devices.

Five safety rules for iCloud users include accessing accounts solely through Apple’s official platforms, refraining from sharing passwords, verifying links before clicking them, utilizing updated anti-malware software with web protection, and steering clear of suspicious websites or payment requests.
