“Boy Injured by Electric Bike Spurs Call for Stricter Regulations”

Published on

A six-year-old boy named DeMari Disna from Steinbach is now confined indoors for the remainder of his summer vacation following a collision with an electric bike. The incident occurred while he was out with his siblings and friends on a walking trail near a soccer park close to his residence. DeMari sustained injuries to his left leg, with both the tibia and fibula being fractured.

After the accident, DeMari was taken to Bethesda Regional Health Centre where he had to wait for 19 hours before receiving a soft cast. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg to have a hard cast put on his leg. His mother, Shannon Broesky, mentioned that DeMari, being an active child, is finding it challenging to adapt to a sedentary lifestyle during his recovery.

Broesky, who usually keeps an eye on her children playing in the park from their home, emphasized the need for stricter regulations on electric bikes. The family was not overly concerned about the devices until the incident involving DeMari occurred. The Manitoba government is currently working on developing legislation regarding battery-powered bikes and scooters.

Transportation Minister Lisa Naylor expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents by updating regulations as necessary. Mayor Earl Funk of Steinbach highlighted the potential dangers of e-bikes in the hands of inexperienced users and stressed the importance of both regulation and education.

Meanwhile, the City of Morden has already established its own bylaws regarding electric vehicles, including rules on helmet usage and traffic signal compliance. Mayor Nancy Penner called for provincial guidelines, especially concerning the appropriate age for using e-bikes and e-scooters, to ensure consistency across regions.

Broesky, despite the unfortunate event, emphasized forgiveness and accountability rather than seeking confrontation. She mentioned the importance of understanding that accidents can happen and the need for responsible behavior when using electric vehicles.
