Britain is seeking insights from the Netherlands on tackling the ‘Neets’ crisis, as the Netherlands boasts the lowest rates in Europe. Pat McFadden, a prominent Labour minister, shared plans to visit the country following a stark report warning of a potential “lost generation” in the UK.
In the Netherlands, only 5.3% of individuals aged 15 to 24 are classified as Neets, significantly lower than the UK’s 15.8% Neet rate, which recently surpassed 1 million for the first time in over a decade.
McFadden highlighted the importance of studying successful strategies implemented by other countries, such as the Netherlands, to address youth disengagement effectively. He emphasized the need for a structured approach offering various opportunities like training, work experience, or education to prevent young people from transitioning into inactive lifestyles.
Furthermore, the Resolution Foundation think-tank suggested that aligning the UK’s Neet rate with that of the Netherlands could potentially benefit 600,000 young individuals, reducing unemployment and disengagement.
In response to the crisis, former Cabinet minister Alan Milburn emphasized the longstanding success of the Netherlands’ youth guarantee schemes compared to the UK’s temporary responses. Milburn stressed the necessity of establishing a sustainable infrastructure to address youth disengagement as a permanent structural condition rather than a series of emergencies.
Additionally, McFadden reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eliminating “discriminatory” age bands in the minimum wage, though the timeline for implementation remains uncertain pending advice from the Low Pay Commission.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) announced plans to introduce hundreds of thousands of new work experience opportunities, with support from major employers like Gatwick airport. This initiative aims to provide valuable placements for young individuals seeking employment, like Beth Owen from South Croydon, who expressed optimism after attending an interview at Gatwick for a duty-free position following a challenging 10-month job search.
