A British couple is facing a decade-long imprisonment in Iran on charges of espionage, leading them to endure harsh conditions at a notorious prison in Tehran. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, hailing from Sussex, were convicted of espionage after their arrest in 2025 during a motorcycle journey across Iran. Despite denying the allegations, they are now confined at Evin prison, sharing cramped cells with over a dozen inmates and sleeping on rat-infested floors, a situation deemed “totally unjustifiable” by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper.

According to Ms. Foreman’s son, Joe Bennett, the couple is housed in 8×4 cells with up to 15 other individuals, some sleeping on bare metal beds or concrete floors. Bennett highlighted the prison’s unsanitary conditions, mentioning the presence of rats, lack of ventilation, and scarce resources in the facility. He expressed concerns about their safety, especially as the country faced turmoil with ongoing protests and executions.

Despite criticism of government inaction, there is hope that the recent sentencing may prompt progress in the Foremans’ case, potentially leading to their release. The UK government, while condemning the imprisonment, has pledged to work towards repatriating the couple. Foreign Secretary Ms. Cooper assured a relentless pursuit of the case with the Iranian government until Craig and Lindsay Foreman are safely returned home.

The Foremans are held in separate sections at the prison, where reports of torture and inhumane treatment are common among the diverse inmate population, including journalists and political prisoners.
