A British entrepreneur, Anoosheh Ashoori, who was imprisoned in Tehran simultaneously with Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and freed on the same day, participated in the London marathon to raise funds for rescuing dogs in Iran. The 72-year-old Ashoori, expressing disgust at the mistreatment of dogs by the Iranian regime, completed the marathon in 5 hours 57 minutes, collecting £3,400 to aid in saving dogs from the strife-ridden nation.
According to Ashoori, dogs in Iran are subjected to poisoning and shootings by authorities. He highlighted the efforts of private dog shelters in rescuing and treating these animals, aiming to rehome them outside Iran to prevent further harm. Concerned about potential repercussions, Ashoori refrained from disclosing the shelter names to avoid possible interference by authorities.
During his imprisonment lasting 1677 days, Ashoori recounted hearing gunshots at night, revealing that municipal workers shot dogs, leading to agonizing howls of pain from the wounded animals. Despite his helplessness in aiding the suffering animals, he emphasized the need to address the atrocities inflicted on them.
Ashoori, hailing from South London, maintained a strong bond with Zaghari-Ratcliffe following their shared ordeal, both advocating for reforms in Iran. He postponed a scheduled shoulder operation to partake in the marathon, driven by his commitment to advocating for the neglected dogs in Iran and raising awareness about the injustices faced by both humans and animals under the oppressive regime.
Reflecting on his experiences, Ashoori emphasized the importance of optimism and activism in effecting change in Iran, urging citizens to utilize their voices to challenge the regime’s actions. He emphasized the significance of perseverance and unity in bringing about positive transformations, drawing lessons from his time in captivity. Ashoori and Zaghari-Ratcliffe were released on the same day, March 16, 2022, marking the end of their detainment in Iran.
Ashoori, a British-Iranian businessman, was apprehended in Iran in 2017 while visiting his mother, later receiving a 12-year prison sentence in 2019 on charges of espionage and acquiring illicit wealth.
