“Primary School Teacher Accused of Secretly Recording Boys in Restroom”

Published on

A teacher at a primary school has been accused of using a camera to secretly record students in the boys’ restroom. Timothy Blamires, aged 33, made a virtual appearance at Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court in south Melbourne and was denied bail due to concerns about potential evidence tampering. Authorities took him into custody last Tuesday following the discovery of a camera at Kingswood Primary School in Dingley Village, leading to charges of producing and possessing child abuse material.

According to prosecutors, a cleaner found a hidden camera disguised within an air freshener in the restroom, positioned towards the urinals. The cleaner promptly secured the device in a bag and placed it on the headteacher’s desk. Blamires allegedly relocated the camera to a drawer in the school’s sick bay after retrieving it. Subsequently, upon his arrest, the air freshener was purportedly located in his possession at the school.

Law enforcement officials reportedly seized electronic devices such as laptops, phones, and tablets from Blamires’ residence as part of the ongoing investigation. Allegations suggest that footage captured on the camera depicted Blamires setting up the device and students using the restroom.

Magistrate Timothy Gattuso justified the denial of bail, citing concerns about the potential for witness interference and evidence tampering by Blamires. Furthermore, the magistrate highlighted discrepancies in the passwords provided by the accused to the police.

Despite an offer of a AU$50,000 surety from Blamires’ brother to secure his release on bail, the prosecution contended that he posed a risk to the community and might attempt to destroy evidence. Mr. Gattuso referenced the allegation that Blamires had attempted to conceal the camera after its discovery by a cleaner as a reason for the bail refusal.

During the court proceedings, a mother of one of the affected students expressed the emotional difficulty of the situation. She described her experience in court as extremely challenging but necessary for processing the unfolding events.
