The family of a British mother of five is working tirelessly to repatriate her as she remains in a coma in Gran Canaria. Emily Casey, 34, fell seriously ill during a vacation in the Canary Islands with her husband Jamie Casey and their five children. Just three days after their arrival on the island, Emily encountered breathing difficulties and was promptly taken to a local hospital.
Having recently recovered from pneumonia, medical professionals initially suspected a blood clot in her lung. Jamie was asked to pay £3,000 upfront for a CT scan. Emily’s father, John, transferred the funds for the scan, which revealed a recurrence of pneumonia and fluid accumulation in one of her lungs, necessitating drainage.
While Jamie returned to their hotel to care for their children that evening, he repeatedly tried to contact Emily throughout the night with no response. The next morning, he rushed back to the hospital to find his wife in an induced coma on life support. In a state of distress, Jamie reached out to their relatives in the UK, and Emily’s mother flew to Gran Canaria to assist in her care.
After the vacation ended on May 19, Jamie returned to Liverpool with their children to organize childcare arrangements. He later flew back to Gran Canaria to be by his wife’s side, only to learn that she had developed sepsis. Unfortunately, on May 23, the family received disheartening news that Emily’s condition had deteriorated, with pneumonia reemerging in her lungs and sepsis spreading in her bloodstream.
With hospital bills surpassing £8,000 and their insurance provider declining coverage due to Emily’s recent pneumonia recovery, the family is urgently seeking assistance to bring Emily back to the UK. A fundraising campaign has been launched to support this cause, and donations can be made to Emily’s GoFundMe page.
