A British traveler finds himself in a dire situation overseas following a motorcycle accident just three hours into his journey. Alex Muncey, 33, embarked on a ten-week adventure in Colombo, Sri Lanka, only to face a nightmarish scenario on the initial day of his trip. While en route from the airport to his accommodation, a collision with a lorry on a blind bend caused severe injuries, including a brain bleed, three fractures in his right arm, and four fractures in his right leg.
Hailing from Cambridgeshire, the injured Brit is currently stranded due to an insurance mishap. Despite having travel insurance, it turns out that the policy only covers motorcycles up to 125cc, whereas Alex had rented a 250cc bike. His partner, Helen Garrod, expressed deep disappointment at the turn of events, emphasizing Alex’s lifelong dream of embarking on such an adventure.
Photographs from the hospital depict Alex in a vulnerable state, with his leg immobilized in plaster and metal pins inserted. To assist with the substantial medical expenses and repatriation costs, Helen and Alex’s family have initiated a GoFundMe campaign, aiming to raise funds that could reach £40,000.
Highlighting the insurance oversight, Helen mentioned that Alex, an experienced motorcyclist with nine years of riding under his belt, believed he was adequately covered for all activities, including biking. The financial burden of medical treatments and repatriation weighs heavily on the family, with estimates indicating that a medically assisted flight back home could cost between £30,000 to £40,000, excluding surgical procedures.
