Calls for Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to Surrender City Honor

Published on

Disgraced Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is facing calls to give up one of his remaining titles in the aftermath of his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Members of the City of London Corporation have reached out to the former Duke, urging him to renounce the freedom of the city honor bestowed upon him in 2012. The honor was passed down to Andrew through his late father, Prince Philip, who was previously a freeman.

While the corporation acknowledged that Andrew legally acquired the honor through patrimony, they emphasized that there is no established procedure to revoke it. The freedom of the city is a symbolic designation historically granting recipients the right to lead sheep across London Bridge.

In response to the situation, a spokesperson stated that the award was inherited by Andrew as a legal entitlement and not through the typical nomination process. Elected members have decided to formally request Andrew to give up the honor, with further actions pending based on his response.

Notable figures who have received similar accolades include Sir Lenny Henry, Cate Blanchett, Harry Kane, and Frank Bruno. Andrew’s siblings, including the King, also hold the freedom of the city of London.

Andrew has consistently denied any misconduct related to Jeffrey Epstein, despite facing public scrutiny and losing his royal titles and honors last year due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

The freedom of the city tradition dates back to 1237, allowing recipients to pursue their trade freely. Typically, the honor is granted to individuals recommended by corporation councillors.

Recent events have seen Andrew’s ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, stripped of her “Freedom of the City of York” honor. This move followed mounting pressure on her ties to Epstein, against whom she has denied all accusations. Andrew himself was also stripped of the same honor in 2022.

If Andrew agrees to relinquish the London honor, it would mark another loss in a series of titles he has forfeited due to his connections with Epstein. In a separate incident, Andrew was arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office and was briefly detained before being released for further investigation.
